Abstract

Introduction: Ecopreneurship signifies a transformative approach to business practices that integrates entrepreneurial endeavours with environmental sustainability, prioritising ecological integrity alongside financial viability. In India, where swift industrial advancement frequently jeopardises ecological equilibrium and economic growth often conflicts with environmental conservation, ecopreneurs are pivotal in advancing sustainability. Despite this critical role, they encounter a myriad of obstacles that hinder their initiatives. The present study therefore seeks to identify the primary challenges faced by ecopreneurs in India, to analyse the implications of these challenges for the sustainability of ecopreneurial ventures, and to propose strategies for overcoming them.

Methodology: The study adopts a qualitative research methodology, incorporating a comprehensive literature review and case studies of ecopreneurs operating in India. Data were gathered from a variety of sources, including academic journals, government publications, and interviews with ecopreneurs and industry specialists. The analysis aimed to identify recurring themes pertaining to the challenges encountered by ecopreneurs and to assess their implications for sustainable business practices. The review synthesises key studies on the role of ecopreneurs, the barriers they confront, and the implications for sustainable development, particularly in the Indian context.

Results & Discussion: The analysis identifies six principal categories of challenges. Regulatory hurdles arise from complex licensing and permitting processes and inconsistent environmental policies. Access to funding is constrained by limited financial support for ventures perceived as risky or low in profit margin, together with high interest rates and a limited supply of venture capital. Market awareness and demand are restricted by low consumer awareness of eco-friendly products and by price sensitivity. Technology and infrastructure limitations, particularly in rural regions, restrict efficiency and scalability, while competition from well-resourced conventional industries and cultural resistance to change further constrain growth. These challenges present substantial barriers to the growth of ecopreneurial ventures in India, and failure to address them may severely limit the contribution of ecopreneurs to sustainable development. The study accordingly delineates strategies encompassing the strengthening of regulatory frameworks, enhanced access to funding through impact investment and greater awareness of grants and subsidies, consumer education and collaborative marketing, investment in technology and infrastructure through public-private partnerships and innovation hubs, and the building of a supportive ecosystem through networking, mentorship, and training.

Conclusion: Ecopreneurs in India encounter considerable challenges that impede their capacity to effectively promote sustainable development. Addressing regulatory barriers, improving access to funding, raising market awareness, investing in technology, and cultivating a supportive ecosystem are vital steps in overcoming these challenges. The findings underscore the necessity for a supportive ecosystem that encourages innovation and awareness. By establishing an environment that is conducive to ecopreneurship, India can leverage the potential of these innovators to advance a more sustainable future.
