Introduction: Ecopreneurship, or ecological entrepreneurship, has emerged as a sustainable approach to addressing environmental challenges while fostering economic growth. In India, with its diverse ecological zones and growing environmental consciousness, ecopreneurship presents both significant opportunities and hurdles. This article examines the concept of ecopreneurship in the Indian context, highlighting its advantages, such as environmental conservation, job creation, and market potential, while also exploring challenges like regulatory hurdles, financial constraints, and cultural barriers.
Methodology: This research uses secondary data sources that include government publications, journal articles, trade journals, and other sources accessible on the internet. Survival and growth factors were obtained from analysing quantitative data relative to ecopreneurial ventures, specific markets, and policy contexts. Case studies of prospective and restless ecopreneurs in India were also discussed for better understanding of their knowledge, and qualitative methods were used to make meaning of patterns and themes in the secondary data analysis. A comparative research strategy was employed in comparing the progress of ecopreneurships in India to global trends, and overall efficiency and efficacy of ecopreneurial ventures was evaluated with common performance indicators illustrating environmental responsibility, market share, and business profitability. Data were compiled from reports of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Central Pollution Control Board, environmental science journals and organisations such as TERI.
Results & Discussion: Five Indian ventures were selected for case study: Beco (Maharashtra, 2018), Chakr Innovation (Delhi, 2016), Saahas Zero (Karnataka, 2013), Banyan Nation (Telangana, 2013) and TreeTag (Kerala, 2021). Recycling initiatives have reduced urban waste by 25%, solar and wind projects have increased renewable energy by 30%, and eco-tourism and organic farming have supported the preservation of endangered species. Economically, renewable energy has created over 1,00,000 jobs and ₹12,000 crores in revenue, organic farming over 50,000 jobs and ₹4,500 crores, and sustainable fashion over 25,000 jobs and ₹2,000 crores. Consumer adoption grew by 40% for organic food products (50 million consumers), 35% for eco-friendly packaging (30 million) and 50% for green energy solutions (20 million). Government incentives total ₹5,000 crores for renewable energy subsidies, ₹2,000 crores for the Start-up India initiative, ₹1,500 crores for tax benefits and ₹500 crores for skill development. Over 60% of green start-ups report delays due to unclear regulatory frameworks (FICCI 2023), only 25% secure seed funding against 45% of traditional start-ups (NASSCOM 2023), and 70% of consumers prioritise cost over sustainability with only 20% aware of eco-friendly alternatives (EY 2023).
Conclusion: The study examines the opportunities and challenges of ecopreneurship in India, highlighting its potential to drive sustainable development, address ecological issues, and generate economic benefits. However, the sector faces hurdles in regulation, funding, and cultural acceptance. Simplifying procedures, offering tax exemptions, and creating clear legal frameworks can encourage ecopreneurs, while developing green bonds, low-cost funding and tailored financial solutions is essential. Education, awareness campaigns and media can foster acceptance and inspire youth to embrace sustainable entrepreneurship. India's natural resources, skilled workforce and rising green consumerism present opportunities, while partnerships with private sectors, community involvement and increased R&D can strengthen ecopreneurship, positioning India as a global leader in sustainability.
