Introduction: Ecopreneurs, or environmental entrepreneurs, are individuals who create and operate businesses with the primary aim of solving environmental challenges or operating sustainably. Unlike traditional entrepreneurs, ecopreneurs are motivated not only by profit but also by a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Their ventures often address issues such as climate change, resource depletion, pollution and biodiversity loss, aligning closely with global sustainability goals. This study examines the pivotal role of ecopreneurs in promoting environmental protection and sustainable development.
Methodology: This research adopts a qualitative, multi-case study approach to explore the role of ecopreneurs in environmental protection. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ecopreneurs operating in diverse sectors, supported by analysis of company documents and external sources. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in motivations, business strategies, and environmental outcomes. To ensure validity, data triangulation was employed, combining interview insights with documentary evidence and secondary literature. An abductive approach guided the analysis, allowing for theory development based on empirical findings and contextual explanations. The literature review covers four recurring themes: motivations, business models, barriers and enablers, and impact.
Results & Discussion: The study reveals that ecopreneurs advance environmental protection by innovating sustainable solutions such as renewable energy technologies, waste reduction systems and sustainable agriculture practices; influencing consumer behavior by offering green alternatives and raising awareness; driving systemic change through stakeholder collaboration, policy advocacy and green job creation; and achieving measurable impact, with case studies indicating composite sustainability scores as high as 79.5% in some industries. Motivational factors identified include a mix of intrinsic values such as personal commitment and concern for future generations and extrinsic drivers such as market opportunities and supportive ecosystems. Barriers encountered include regulatory challenges and limited access to capital, while enablers include policy support, collaboration networks and consumer demand. Five key contributions are documented, and examples of ecopreneurial impact include Sea6 Energy in ocean-based seaweed farming, Kiverdi in carbon-to-nutrient conversion, Treeconomy in forest carbon offset technology and Shiwi in Amazon sustainable products.
Conclusion: Ecopreneurs are pivotal actors in the pursuit of environmental protection and sustainable development. Their ventures drive innovation, influence societal norms, and deliver measurable environmental and economic benefits. To maximize their impact, it is essential to address systemic barriers, strengthen supportive ecosystems, and promote collaboration among stakeholders. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies of ecopreneurial ventures, the development of robust impact assessment frameworks, and the exploration of policy interventions that can further empower ecopreneurs to lead the transition toward a more sustainable future.
